PUBLIC MEETINGS SCHEDULED FOR LAX LANDSIDE ACCESS MODERNIZATION PROGRAM

PUBLIC MEETINGS SCHEDULED FOR LAX LANDSIDE ACCESS MODERNIZATION PROGRAM

Two public scoping meetings are scheduled this week by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) to discuss the Notice of Preparation and Initial Study of a Draft Environmental Impact Report for the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) Landside Access Modernization Program.

The purpose of the meetings is to provide information about the proposed project and environmental process, and to obtain the public’s input on environmental concerns that should be addressed in an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) that LAWA will prepare.

The first meeting will be held on Thursday, February 19, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.  The second meeting will be held on Saturday, February 21, from 10 a.m. to noon.  Both meetings will be held in the Proud Bird Restaurant, 11022 Aviation Boulevard, Los Angeles.  Parking is free.

LAWA proposes to implement the LAX Landside Access Modernization Program Project to continue to transform LAX into a world-class airport by relieving unacceptable traffic congestion within the Central Terminal Area (CTA) and on the surrounding street network, thereby improving the travel experience for passengers and providing connection to the regional Metro rail system.  The LAX Landside Access Modernization Program consists of several primary components.  At the centerpiece is an Automated People Mover (APM) system, which would provide free, fast, convenient, and reliable access to the CTA for passengers, employees and other users of LAX, 24 hours a day.  The APM would transport passengers between the CTA and the other main components of the project located east of the CTA, including:

·                     A state-of-the-art, consolidated rental car facility

·                     New public parking facilities

·                     Multiple locations for passenger pick up and drop off

·                     An APM station at a multi-modal/transit facility at 96th Street/Aviation Boulevard planned by Metro as a separate and independent project to provide the opportunity for passengers to access the Metro regional rail system

The LAX Landside Access Modernization Program is part of LAWA’s commitment to reduce emissions from transportation sources to comply with California Senate Bill (SB) 375, improve public health, and meet National Ambient Air Quality Standards defined under the federal Clean Air Act.

The Notice of Preparation is available online at www.connectingLAX.com and will be posted at the Los Angeles City Clerk’s office and on the Los Angeles County Clerk Desk.  A copy of the Initial Study prepared for the proposed project is also available for review at the above website.  For more information or to request a copy, call (800) 919-3766.

Responses to the Notice of Preparation must be received by LAWA no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2015.  Responses should be submitted on the LAX website www.connectingLAX.comor sent to Christopher Koontz, Chief of Airport Planning, at the following address:  Los Angeles World Airports, 1 World Way, Room 218, Los Angeles, CA 90045.

About Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
LAX, the sixth-busiest airport in the world serving nearly 66 million guests in 2022, is owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), a proprietary, revenue-generating department of the City of Los Angeles that also governs Van Nuys Airport (VNY). As the international gateway to the Southern California region, LAX and its partners are dedicated to meeting global airport standards for customer satisfaction, safety, regional economic leadership, organizational performance and sustainability.

To better serve the millions of domestic and international guests that travel through LAX each year, the airport is undergoing a multi-billion-dollar capital improvement program to modernize its entire campus. Initiatives underway include an Automated People Mover, a Consolidated Rental Car Facility and two projects that will each add over one million square feet to the airport's existing property: Terminal 9 and Concourse 0.
