LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ANNOUNCES NIGHTIME RUNWAY CLOSURES
(Los Angeles, California – November 13, 2015) Starting Monday, November 16, 2015, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) will begin nightly closures of runway 24L/6R on the north runway complex starting Monday morning at midnight to 6:30 a.m. and continuing through Friday, November 20 between midnight and 6:30 a.m. The closure is due to LAX’s improvement activities.
These closures will be following by a full 54-hour closure on November 21 and 22. Runway 24L/6R will then be reopened Monday morning, November 23rd to enable all runways to be active for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Following this, the next scheduled extended Runway 24L/6R closure is set for December 26 and 27 that will revert to shortened runway departures on December 28.
Runway Safety Area improvements have been mandated by Congress for all U.S airports. The improvements will provide an extra margin of safety for landing and departing aircraft. To limit the impact on operations, LAX will phase the construction, one runway at a time. We'll use these construction periods as an opportunity to also complete regular runway maintenance, minimizing the impact to operations while making our already safe runways even safer.
The phased closures, which began March 2015, are expected to span a three year period and may cause flight delays similar to those experienced during inclement weather at LAX. Maintenance work has already been completed on two of the airport’s four runways.
People living near LAX may also notice a change in aircraft flight activity and noise as aircraft that normally land on the north outboard runway (24R/6L) will instead land on the north inboard runway (24L/6R). Some aircraft operations may also shift from the north to the south complex. LAX will continue to conduct normal Over-Ocean Operations (midnight to 6:30 AM) during these closure whenever weather and operational conditions permit.
