ROUTE OF SPACE SHUTTLE EXTERNAL FUEL TANK TO CALIFORNIA SCIENCE CENTER TO PASS NEAR LAX SATURDAY MORNING, MAY 21; PASSENGERS ADVISED TO PLAN AHEAD

Airport officials are advising airline passengers and motorists that the transport of the Space Shuttle external fuel tank (ET-94) from Marina del Rey to the California Science Center will require temporary street closures as it moves through the airport area approximately 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2016.

ET-94, the last Space Shuttle external fuel tank in existence, will travel about five miles per hour following a route that includes milestones at the intersections of Culver and Lincoln boulevards, Lincoln and Loyola boulevards, and Loyola Boulevard and Westchester Parkway.  The caravan is expected to  cross Sepulveda Boulevard approximately 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m., reach West Arbor Vitae approximately 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and then continue through the City of Inglewood.

Passengers coming from north of LAX are advised to plan ahead and add extra time if necessary, especially during the airport’s busy morning travel period from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Motorists are advised of the following alternative routes to LAX from the north:

  • Southbound I-405 San Diego Freeway to westbound Manchester Boulevard to southbound Sepulveda Boulevard
  • Southbound I-405 freeway to westbound Century Boulevard
  • Westbound I-105 Century Freeway to northbound Sepulveda Boulevard
  • Southbound Pershing Drive to eastbound Imperial Highway to northbound Sepulveda Boulevard

The public can follow ET-94’s entire route to the California Science Center on Twitter at @casciencecenter and #ETComesHome and #SpotTheTank.  Also, while ET-94 is moving through the airport area, real-time traffic updates will be available on the following LAX Twitter sites:  @LAAirportPD, @flyLAXairport, and @LAX_Community at #LAXTraffic.

As a rule of thumb, LAX officials advise passengers arrive in their airline  terminal two hours before boarding time for a domestic flight and three hours before boarding time for international flights.
