– TRAFFIC ADVISORY –
CRENSHAW/LAX METRO RAIL AND CALTRANS I-405 RAMP REPAVING PROJECTS TO CAUSE CLOSURES, TRAFFIC DELAYS ON CENTURY BOULEVARD NEAR LAX
(Los Angeles, California – July 29, 2016) Three separate projects involving temporary closures of portions of Century Boulevard and the I-405 freeway on- and off-ramps near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) are expected to impact passengers and motorists coming to and from the airport now through Saturday, August 27. Passengers and motorists are advised to plan ahead and expect delays due to these temporary closures. Century Boulevard is a major artery to and from LAX used by more than half of the average 90,000 vehicles entering the Central Terminal Area every day.
Project 1
Periodic single-lane closures on Century and Aviation boulevards near LAX will continue tonight, Friday, July 29, from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., as well as next week so that the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) can complete potholing and water-line work on those streets, as part of the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project. The single-lane closures will be on eastbound Century Boulevard between Aviation Boulevard and Concourse Way, and on northbound Aviation Boulevard between 104th Street and Century. While there will be no work over the remainder of this weekend, the project will continue 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday through Friday, until Saturday, August 6.
Project 2
Tonight, Friday, July 29, starting at 10 p.m., until 5 a.m. on Monday, August 1, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will close the I-405 freeway on- and off-ramps to westbound Century Boulevard near La Cienega Boulevard. The I-405 La Cienega Boulevard on- and off-ramps will remain open during this period. This 55-hour closure of the southbound I-405 Century Boulevard ramps will allow Caltrans crews to repave the ramps as part of a $12.2-million project to repave I-405 from El Segundo Boulevard to Venice Boulevard in the cities of Inglewood, Hawthorne, and Culver City. Rubberized hot mix asphalt will be used to increase the use-life of the highway and provide a smoother and quieter ride.
Project 3
Beginning, Monday, August 1, Metro will implement a month-long rotation of weekly full one-directional closures of Century Boulevard between Aviation Boulevard and Bellanca Avenue so the temporary “falsework” that had supported the bridge during its initial construction can be removed. Closures will occur on weeknights Monday through Friday ONLY between 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. No closures are scheduled for Saturday or Sunday nights. From August 1 through August 6, all westbound lanes of Century Boulevard at Aviation Boulevard will be closed. From August 8 through August 13, all eastbound lanes and the left-most westbound lane will be closed. From August 15 through August 20, all westbound lanes will be closed. From August 22 through August 27, all eastbound lanes and the left-most westbound lane will be closed.
All schedules above are dependent upon weather conditions. Emergency access will be maintained at all times. Metro and Caltrans will install detour signage. Metro also advises that if one week’s work is completed earlier, its contractor will begin on work that was scheduled for the following week. If this occurs, full one-directional closure of Century Boulevard will then reverse to accommodate the accelerated schedule. Metro and its contractor, Walsh-Shea Corridor Constructors -- as well as airport officials -- will inform the public if the work switches directions on Century Boulevard earlier than scheduled.
Metro will detour traffic around the closure. When westbound Century Boulevard is closed, automobiles will be diverted north on Aviation Boulevard, west on West Arbor Vitae Street, south on Airport Boulevard, then west on Century Boulevard. Trucks will be directed to turn north on La Cienega Boulevard, west on West Arbor Vitae Street, south on Airport Boulevard, then west on Century Boulevard. During those weeknights when all eastbound Century Boulevard lanes are closed, all vehicles will be directed north on Airport Boulevard, east onto West Arbor Vitae Street before heading south on Aviation Boulevard to rejoin Century Boulevard. See detour maps below.
