LOS ANGELES BOARD OF AIRPORT COMMISSIONERS APPROVES AGREEMENT WITH LADWP TO ADD DOZENS OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGERS AT LAX, VAN NUYS AIRPORT
Under agreement, chargers would be installed in 40 new locations, and replace 13 older units
(Los Angeles, California – June 2, 2016) Dozens of additional electric vehicle (EV) chargers will be installed for public use at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Van Nuys Airport (VNY) as a result of today’s decision by the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners to approve a participation agreement between Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP).
Under terms of the agreement, LADWP will supply LAWA with a total of 53 Level 2 EV chargers, including 40 to be installed at new locations at the airports and 13 to replace older units. Once installation is completed, LAWA will have 85 chargers at LAX and eight at VNY.
Thirty of the 53 new EV chargers are coming to LAWA through a $500,000 grant that LADWP received from the California Energy Commission (CEC) for the installation of up to 104 chargers on City property. The remaining 23 units will be purchased under an LADWP rebate program that allows LAWA to seek reimbursement of up to $4,000 per EV charger bought and installed.
LAWA will use in-house maintenance and construction crews to complete the installation at an estimated cost of $277,275, and seek reimbursement for the construction and staff costs through the CEC grant and the rebate program. LAWA will be responsible for the cost of on-going maintenance, repairs, warranty claims and electricity.
“The new chargers will help fill a need as the automobile industry continues to produce and sell affordable electric vehicles,” said Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners President Sean O. Burton. “We anticipate installing additional EV chargers in future parking facilities to meet demand as well as continue compliance with the Cal Green requirements for new and existing building facilities.”
