LOS ANGELES BOARD OF AIRPORT COMMISSIONERS ADOPTS ELECTRIC VEHICLE PURCHASING POLICY FOR EVEN GREATER REDUCTIONS IN FLEET VEHICLE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS
(Los Angeles, California – June 15, 2017) The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) today adopted an Electric Vehicle Purchasing Policy (EVPP) to increase the use of all-electric light-duty vehicles in Los Angeles World Airports’ (LAWA) fleet vehicle operations. The policy introduces a requirement to gradually increase the percentage of all-electric light-vehicles purchases to 100 percent of all light-vehicle purchases by 2035. The plan is expected to contribute to improved air quality by further reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from operations at Los Angeles International (LAX) and Van Nuys general aviation (VNY) airports while aligning with sustainability goals set forth in LAWA’s Alternative Fuels Program and the City of Los Angeles’ “Sustainable City pLAn.”
“Today’s approval of the Electric Vehicle Purchasing Policy reflects LAWA’s continued commitment to green operations throughout our airports’ fleets and reaffirms Los Angeles’ status as a municipal leader in sustainable and green transportation,” said LAWA Chief Executive Officer Deborah Flint. “Combined with other ongoing sustainability measures that touch everything from project construction to waste disposal, we’re creating airport experiences that are gold-standard and sustainable.”
The EVPP will accelerate LAWA’s efforts to modernize its alternative fuel vehicle fleet with light-duty electric vehicles. Under the policy, LAWA’s goal will be to ensure that 50 percent of its light-duty vehicle purchases will be all-electric by the end of 2017, followed by subsequent requirements of 80 and 100 percent by 2025 and 2035, respectively.
Though LAWA already operates the largest alternative-fuel airport fleet in the nation, of which 59 percent of the fleet’s 1,000+ vehicles use alternative fuel, LAWA expects electric vehicles to reduce GHG emissions further as new vehicles are added and older ones phased out. On average, a light-duty electric vehicle produces 9,174 fewer pounds of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions than a gasoline vehicle and 4,000 fewer pounds than a CNG vehicle annually.
In addition to electrifying its employee fleet vehicles, LAWA also offers 90 public-facing electric vehicle chargers, which are available for use throughout LAX and VNY. While motorists pay the posted parking fee, LAWA provides the electric charging for free.
About Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
LAX is the fourth busiest airport in the world, second in the United States, and was named one of Skytrax’ 2017 Top 10 Most Improved Airports. LAX served more than 80.9 million passengers in 2016. LAX offers 742 daily nonstop flights to 101 cities in the U.S. and 1,280 weekly nonstop flights to 77 cities in 42 countries on 64 commercial air carriers. LAX ranks 14th in the world and fifth in the U.S. in air cargo tonnage processed, with more than 2.2 million tons of air cargo valued at over $101.4 billion. LAX handled 697,138 operations (landings and takeoffs) in 2016.
An economic study based on 2014 operations reported LAX generated 620,610 jobs in Southern California with labor income of $37.3 billion and economic output (business revenues) of more than $126.6 billion. This activity added $6.2 billion to local and state revenues and $8.7 billion in federal tax revenues. The study also reported that LAX’s ongoing capital-improvement program creates an additional 121,640 annual jobs with labor income of $7.6 billion and economic output of $20.3 billion, $966 million in state and local taxes, and $1.6 billion in federal tax revenues.
LAX is part of a system of two Southern California airports – along with Van Nuys general aviation – that are owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports, a proprietary department of the City of Los Angeles that receives no funding from the City’s general fund.
