LAX WELCOMES UNITED AIRLINES STUDENT INTERNS AS PART OF “UNITED SUMMER ASSOCIATES” PROGRAM
(Los Angeles, California – June 2, 2017) The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) and executives and employees from United Airlines welcomed 20 student interns to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) yesterday as part of United’s “Summer Associates” internship program. Over the course of eight weeks, the students, who were recruited through LAX’s Business & Jobs Resource Center (BJRC) and the Mayor’s Hire LA Youth program, will learn about the wide variety of careers available to them as they discover different airport operations with United’s team at LAX.
“As one of our largest airline partners, we’re thrilled to welcome United’s Summer Associates program to LAX,” said Trevor Daley, Los Angeles World Airports Deputy Executive Director for External Affairs. “We welcome these students and invite them to take advantage of the unique opportunities that only one of the world’s busiest international airports can provide.”
“Our team is excited to expand our United Summer Associates program to LAX after more than a decade of success in Newark,” said Jim Hanselmann, head of United’s Airport Operations at LAX. “The students will carry the knowledge, skills – and most importantly, the friendships from this summer with them for the rest of their careers.”
The United Summer Associates program is in its eleventh year, and is making its debut in Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO) and Houston (IAH). Over 100 interns were sourced by the BJRC and the Mayor’s Hire LA Youth program, with United selecting 20 from this group. These paid internships will introduce students to careers through customer service training, tours of local operations centers, discussions with captains in the chief pilot’s office, and more. The program will end on July 31.
The majority of participants are from the Los Angeles area, with interns coming from cities and localities that include Willowbrook, Hawthorne, Baldwin Hills, Carson, and Exposition Park.
