FINAL NIGHT OF "LAX ON THE MOVE" SEES FIVE AIRLINES RELOCATE OPERATIONS
FINAL NIGHT OF "LAX on the MOVE" SEES FIVE AIRLINES RELOCATE OPERATIONS
UPDATE #2 AT 7:40 AM ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 17, 2017
All of the airlines involved in the final night of the “LAX on the MOVE” airline relocations are operating in their new homes at this time. Delta Air Lines is in Terminals 2 and 3, while JetBlue and Hawaiian Airlines are in Terminal 5 and Air Canada is flying from Terminal 6. Southwest Airlines is checking in passengers for its international flights at Terminal 1, then those passengers will be bused to the Tom Bradley International Terminal, where their aircraft are staged.
A total of 16 box trucks and 5 tractor-trailer were used in the Tuesday night-Wednesday morning operation. The trucks were finished on the Upper/Departure Level by 4:40 a.m., and ceased operations on the Lower/Arrivals Level as of 7 a.m. More than 200 movers were involved, with a total of 5,700 boxes moved using 800 dollies. Three of the big rigs were filled with office and lounge furniture. Other items moved included check-in kiosks and counters. Those that were no longer needed by the airlines were taken to warehouse storage and will transferred elsewhere.
Nine planes needed to be towed. Because this moved involved several larger airlines, there was also more ground service equipment to move on Wednesday morning than in the previous two nights.
The moves went smoothly with a few minor hiccups. The biggest involved a utility shut down request in Terminal 2, where an electrical panel upgrade had been requested for the Security Screening Check Point area. The power was scheduled to be out from 2 to 4 a.m., but was not restored until about 4:25 a.m. The TSA needed time to recalibrate its machines at the checkpoint, which led to a line and at least one flight delay. Once TSA could resume screening the line was getting shorter within 15 minutes.
While the moves are nearly complete, passengers should still check with their airline’s official website for the most accurate information on the location of their flight.
Passengers are strongly encouraged to check in, print or download boarding passes before leaving for LAX, so they can be aware of the changes and arrive at the correct terminal for their departure. In addition, passengers are encouraged to arrive earlier than usual, 3 hours for a domestic flight, 4 hours for an international flight. When arriving at LAX, look up at new signage that will be updated nightly to reflect the moves, and which will identify the new airline terminal locations. Finally, passengers are reminded to ask for help if they have problems finding their flights. More than 200 volunteers are on hand, many of them in green vests that match a green-wrapped shuttle bus that will run on both the upper-and lower-level roadways to help transport passengers to their correct terminal.
