SEPTEMBER MODERNIZATION HIGHLIGHTS
Key Updates on Construction Projects at LAX and VNY
|
|
|
(Los Angeles, CA) Each month, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) shares updates on current and upcoming construction projects at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Van Nuys Airport (VNY). This newsletter contains information about the status of projects within the terminals at LAX, as well as construction impacts to the airport roadways and the surrounding communities and improvements at VNY.
In September, work will begin on the installation of a pedestrian walkway connecting the Terminal 2-3 headhouse to the future Center Central Terminal Area (CTA) station for the LAX Automated People Mover (APM). Additional work continues on the APM train guideway and stations, along with Terminal Vertical Core and modernization projects in the CTA.
Temporary pedestrian walkways are in place in the construction zones on the Upper/Departures Level, reducing drop-off lane availability. Portions of Center Way are closed for APM guideway and station construction, with other roadways/lanes restricted overnight.
Work also continues on other elements of the Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP), which includes the APM train system, a Consolidated Rent-A-Car (ConRAC) facility, the APM Maintenance and Storage Facility and the Intermodal Transportation Facilities (ITF). A link is available for webcams that allow the public to see the ongoing work by clicking here. Photo galleries are available here.
Work to install an electronic "Smart Parking" system throughout the CTA will reduce the number of available spaces in some structures. To see real-time parking availability, click here.
An interactive map that includes current construction projects can be found here. For more information about specific lane closures and construction projects, click on the hard hats.

COVID-19 testing is available on the north end of Terminal 2 on the Lower/Arrivals Level. Click here for more information. Construction is taking place on a new headhouse for the terminals as well as a replacement for Terminal 3.
- Tom Bradley International Terminal: The north escalators and stairs located outside the terminal are temporarily closed due to vertical core construction. The central entrance on the Upper/Departures Level is also temporarily closed. Tunnels to allow access to the north entrances are open on both levels. On the Lower/Arrivals Level, the entrance on the north corner of the terminal is also open. The stairway on the south end of the terminal is temporarily closed, but the escalators remain open. The bike rack on the Lower/Arrivals Level at the south end of Tom Bradley has been temporarily relocated to Parking Structure 4. Barriers are in place in the north end of the terminal for construction of a domestic baggage claim. The information desk located on the Lower/Arrivals Level has moved to a temporary location south of the bag claim construction area. Due to construction on the north mezzanine, guests and employees are routed to the south mezzanine to access the Transportation Security Administration security screening checkpoint. No-cost COVID-19 vaccinations are available Monday-Saturday near the Time Tower in the Great Hall (for guests who have cleared security or are changing planes) as well as near the information booth in the international arrivals area on the Lower Level. Click here for more information. COVID-19 tests are available in Aisle C in the ticket lobby on the Upper/Departures Level. Click here for more information.
- Terminals 4 and 5: The modernization program continues. Baggage Carousels 1 and 2 in Terminal 4 have been replaced and expanded, with carousels 3 and 4 taken off line during construction of the Terminal 4.5 Vertical Core. Carousels 5 and 6 are open in Terminal 5. Gate 51A is temporarily closed for construction.
- Terminal 6: Gate 61 is closed for construction of the Terminal 5.5 Vertical Core. Several additional gates are closed for modernization.

Updates on Other Projects:
- Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP): The Automated People Mover (APM) train guideway is now 70% complete, and work to connect the guideway over Century Boulevard is underway. In addition to Century, the only remaining sections to be connected are over Sepulveda Boulevard and between the Center and West Central Terminal Area (CTA) stations. Outside the CTA, station construction is underway at the Intermodal Transportation Facility (ITF)-East, which will provide the long-awaited connection to regional transportation in the future. The ITF-West is preparing to make its public debut as substantial completion was achieved Aug. 31. The approximately 4,300-stall parking structure will open this fall. On the east side of the project at the Consolidated Rent-A-Car (ConRAC) facility, ramps to connect the Ready Return/Idle Storage building to the Quick Turn Around building are currently being constructed. Curb and gutter work and construction of future employee parking areas are also underway, while construction of the rooftop customer service area continues.
- Airport Police Facility: The Airport Police Facility is in its final stage of completion. Currently, the builder is working on finishing punch list items, commissioning of building mechanical and electrical systems, final inspections, and final cleaning. For the exterior of the site, landscape planting and installation of the irrigation system is complete. Asphalt paving at the perimeter road, quad, and the visitor parking lot is complete.
