(Los Angeles) Yesterday, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) formally recognized 21 jet operators as part of the Fly Friendly Program at Van Nuys Airport (VNY) as part of a special meeting of the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners.

"Fly Friendly Program honorees demonstrate a commitment shared by Van Nuys Airport and our tenants to reduce aircraft noise while preserving operational safety and ensuring the continued economic prosperity of our community," said Dave Reich, Deputy Executive Director for Mobility Planning and Strategy, LAWA. "I thank each of them for their continued efforts to reduce aircraft noise and be good neighbors."

Established in 2012, the program recognizes jet operators that achieve the highest level of compliance with mandatory noise regulations and voluntary noise abatement programs at VNY. These awards, called Friendly Flyer awards, are presented annually to jet operators that meet or exceed the following criteria:

  • At least 60 southbound jet departures
  • No violations of LAWA's Noise Abatement and Curfew Regulation, Non-Additional Rule and Noisier Jet Phase-Out
  • Compliance at 99% or greater with the No Early Turn and the Quiet Jet Departure Programs
  • Observance of the Quieter Nights Program, in which jet operators are encouraged to avoid flights between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. (this element was added as an element to the award criteria in 2021)
