LOS ANGELESOn April 17, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) formally recognized the winners of the 2024 Van Nuys Airport (VNY) Friendly Flyer Award program, during a special meeting of the Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners held at the airport.

"The Fly Friendly Program is an important part of Van Nuys Airport's overall outreach and sustainability efforts, in which we work to benefit our neighboring communities through engagement, enrichment, and action," said Jacob Haik, Van Nuys Airport Manager, LAWA. "Together, as part of an ongoing dialogue of community stakeholders, airport tenants, and regulators, we are building a VNY that is responsive to its neighbors and enables economic opportunities in more sustainable ways than ever before."

The Friendly Flyer Award program was established in 2012, and recognizes jet operators that achieve the highest level of compliance with mandatory noise policies and voluntary noise abatement programs at VNY. The annual award is presented to jet operators that meet or exceed the established program criteria as set forth below:

  • At least 60 southbound jet departures
  • No violations of LAWA's Noise Abatement and Curfew Regulation, Non-Additional Rule and Noisier Jet Phase-Out
  • Compliance at 99% or greater with the No Early Turn and the Quiet Jet Departure Programs
  • Observance of the Quieter Nights Program, in which jet operators are encouraged to avoid flights between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. (this element was added as an element to the award criteria in 2021)

"These winners have been instrumental in minimizing aircraft noise and play an important role in helping our neighbors maintain their quality of life," said Crystal Lee, Deputy Executive Director for the Airport Development Group, Sustainability, Energy, Environmental and Development Services, LAWA. "In 2024, these operators reduced their cumulative net VNY nighttime jet operations by 21 percent year-over-year, demonstrating their commitment to flying quieter and friendlier for the benefit of our surrounding communities."
